Next in our Profiles in Design series is Carrie!!

Who are you, where are you from, etc.:
I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I grew up in the Spring Branch bubble and then went away to college at LSU. This is where I found my creative side and my love of design! This is also where I found my love for the game! Geaux Tigers!!! After I graduated, I started working for Laura U in August of 2007…almost three years now! Wow time flies! Oh, and I am getting married in December to the nicest boy in the world! YAY!

Who shares your address (dogs, babies, significant others):
My fiancé (Alex) and I bought an old home in Spring Branch about two years ago. We live with our almost four year old adorable Maltese George…love him! He was the best gift that Alex ever gave me…well, besides the portable foot bath from CVS my freshman year of college! George likes long walks, lots of attention, and his best friend “snowman” that never leaves his side! Babies… Hhmmm - I dunno…maybe soon?

Favorite restaurant:
Oh gosh…let’s see! Well of course I never turn down a delicious Mexican meal and margarita. If I had to name a few I would say, Cyclone Anayas, El Tiempo, and Escalantes, which are all tied for first in the Mexican category! I also enjoy cute hole-in-the-wall restaurants where you can bring your own wine! My favorite BYOW is La Vista…but I do want to let you know there is a great new spot…Hollister Grill (at Hollister and Long Point). The location is a little “sketchy” but the food is absolutely to die for and the atmosphere is casual, perfect for two or just for a fun gathering of close friends!!!

Outside the office, you can find me:
At my second job…planning my wedding! No, I’m kidding but it seriously feels like a second job! I must thank my wedding planner…MY MOM! Without her, I am not quite sure nothing would get done! Or you can find me at home. I love hanging out at home and doing small DIY projects around the house! PS. you will see one of my latest home projects in my next blog…so stay tuned! I also enjoy walking with George (my dog…not my fiancé, he refuses to walk with me). I also love hanging out with my family and friends for any and all occasions!

Designer I'd like to meet:
There are two…interior designer Kelly Wearstler…duh! - I think her designs are so unique and you just know it’s her in every room she touches. And in the fashion arena, it would be Diane Von Furstenburg. I love her use of shapes on traditional styles. Both their styles are very similar to mine. They both use bold colors with an edgy twist on classic designs! They each use many different patterns and textures in one room/outfit! Most often, you think that multiple patterns wouldn’t work… somehow these ladies mix it up and create a story with their designs! I just LOVE them!

Wish I had designed:
Any of the beautiful lines for Restoration Hardware so that I could get them for free. Right now this is the style you will find in my home!

Mine was done on a budget…a very small one!!! Check out my DIY play on the RH books…please don’t laugh!

I can always watch:
This is easy…90210 re-runs on the soap network of course! This is how I would love to spend every Saturday morning…but sometimes it’s not the best idea to sit in your PJ’s all day! My favorites are the episodes after their high school years! Oh, and when that is not on I am tuned in to Fox News for all the latest fair and balanced news! Check them out!

Side Note…one of the things that drives my fiancé the craziest about me is the fact that I would rather watch a movie I have seen before than one that I have never seen. I think it could possibly be because I like to know how it is going to end…what does that say about me?

In the movie about my life, _______________ would play me because:
Kimberley Williams from Father of the Bride…for the obvious reason that I am getting married, but more so because my dad is such a George Banks!!! My dad would definitely wear his old “tuxodo”! And this is probably one of my all-time faves that I can watch over and over again…haha my fiancé hates that I can recite every word!

I own WAY too many:
CLOTHES…I have a problem. Maybe you have heard of it…shopaholic! We have 4 closets in our house and 3 of them are full of my things. Oops.

Guilty pleasures:
Hhhmmmmm…anything with cheese. I love, love, love, chips and “queso” anytime and anywhere, it’s probably my most favorite meal. We used to have a cheese day at work that was once a month! And then I could always go for a bag of sour jelly beans! - Yummy!!

If I wasn't a designer, I'd:
A storm chaser for sure…I think my obsession with the weather comes from living in Louisiana with all the hurricane threats. I love the drama of a big storm! IKE was the most exciting night ever…quite scary too! Ask me at any time during the day and I know what is going on with the weather! Like today for example…check out the huge storm heading right for us!

I also think that I could have a successful career as a detective!!! I LOVE crime shows…Law and Order, CSI, criminal minds…my fave! I have also been known to catch shop lifters! Beware!

My perfect day:
Would be waking up early and going on a long walk around the neighborhood with George, and then going home to a big cup of coffee and breakfast with my fiancé and 90210 playing in the background. Getting some things done around the house and then heading to my parents’ house for grill time and family time. Best day ever!

Design Profile: Meet Jennifer

Who are you, where are you from, etc.:
My name is Jennifer and I am a design intern at Laura U! While I am currently living in Houston, during the school year I go to Stephen F. Austin in Nacodoches. Next year I will graduate with a degree in interior design and art.

Who shares your address (dogs, babies, significant others):
My fiancée Kris and I have a house in Nacogdoches, we live there with our roommate KC and our 3 dogs.

Our dog Jake (the one wearing the tuxedo) is a lab mixed with an Australian cattle dog (we think). Kris picked him out at the shelter as a puppy.

Viewing Charlie sideways, is way more fun..... our oldest Charlie is a little Pomeranian. He is proof you can find bred dogs at the shelter! He is scared of thunder, lighting, and water bottles. He is very sweet and extremely loyal.

This is when we first got him; the poor little guy was naked.

He turned out to be quite handsome!

Our newest dog Petey (full name Peter Cottontail) was also a rescue. The shelter told us that he was wrapped in a trash bag and in a dumpster when they found him with a broken arm (who could do something like this??) He is the happiest of all our dogs, he jumps like a rabbit (hence the name) and can be a little terror at times, but he loves to cuddle and give kisses.

Prison Petey…just begging to be freed........ and yes! I do realize I am a crazy pet owner.

Favorite Restaurant:
This could be quite a long list I dare say. I love eating, I love going out to eat, I love eating and watching TV…you just can’t go wrong with it. No matter what you are doing if you add food it’s going to be fun. When it comes to Mexican food Casa Ole’ is numero uno. Then there is Chinese food, P.F. Changs wins this one and there is also a little hole in the wall place in Nacogdoches called Peking, which I just can’t get enough of.

Outside the office, you can find me:
Playing with my dogs, skyping the love of my life (who is currently in Wisconsin), planning my wedding, swimming at the pool (my number one favorite summer activity), or working on a nursery for my friend Ashley’s soon to be born baby!

Designer I'd like to meet:
Frank Lloyd Wright. He was an architect, an interior designer, a writer, and an educator. He did it all! He designed everything in his houses right down to the flatware. He was completely meticulous and super creative. Falling water is my all time favorite house. It’s contemporary, but still manages to fit in seamlessly with its natural surroundings.

Wish I had designed:
The Yellow Tree house restaurant in New Zealand, designed by Pacific Environments Architects Ltd. This is magnificent! I love trees and nature. I love bringing the outside inside. This structure encompasses all of that.

Even more beautiful at night.

I can always watch:
Friends or The Office - these shows will never stop making me laugh. No matter how many times I’ve seen an episode.

In the movie about my life, _______________ would play me because:
Kate Hudson, I just want to be her..... Kris also tells me I look like her and I pretend it’s true.

I own "WAY" too many:

SHOES: But I am with the school of thought that says I girl can't ever really have "too many" ~~enough~~ shoes.

My Guilty Pleasures:

I love to dress up. Halloween may have just beat out Sir Christmas as my very favorite holiday.

Lucky for me I found an amazing guy that loves to dress up with me!

Sometimes, we don’t even need Halloween as an excuse. This was for New Years.

And then sometimes I make my own costumes. This is me channeling Lady Gaga.

My Motto: Life is just better in Costume.

If I wasn't A Designer, I'd:

Love to be a street performer in Honolulu. I would love to play all day at the beach and then go paint for people at night. I also used to daydream about becoming a cake artist…I can’t get enough of those addicting cake shows. Ace of Cakes anyone?

Now if I could also find a job where I get to play with dogs all day…this would be ideal.

My perfect Day:

I wake up in a tree house in Australia. Kris and I have a delicious breakfast of biscuits and gravy. We then go swimming with dolphins and parasailing in the ocean. We eat a huge lunch of chicken sandwiches and pineapple. We spend the afternoon jumping into & off of waterfalls. That night, we get all dressed up and go shopping (with a million dollars that I find in the street) and then we eat the most delicious Chinese food I have ever had (Mexican food could also be supplemented here.......) The night will end with us falling asleep in a hammock swinging above the ocean gazing at the stars. now, that's what I call a Perfect Day!

Profiles in Design: Meet Kellye......!

Who are you? and where are you from?

I am Kellye - Junior Designer at Laura U! I graduated from Texas State with a degree in Interior Design and a minor in Technology. I grew up in Houston, but I have also lived in San Antonio, Austin, and San Marcos. The parks in Austin are amazing, but Houston is still by far my favorite city!

Who shares your address? (dogs, cats, significant other)?:

I am currently dating the most amazing guy, Kyle and we have two German Shepherds - Sage and Braver (Braver means "good" in German) Sage is the big boy and Braver is the "little girl", who is really not a girl - go figure!!. We have had a blast designing and landscaping the new house together!

Favorite Restaurant:

My favorite restaurant is Marks; it used to be a church, which is pretty cool - the best American cuisine ever!! I love brunch, so my favorite brunch restaurant is Backstreet Cafe. I also could eat Sushi everyday for the rest of my life! (or Indian food!) - Taiko has the best Sushi!

Outside the office, you can find me:
Working on a new DIY project! Right now, I am repainting some chairs in a metallic color and reupholstering a chair!

Designer(s) I'd like to meet:

The set designers for Ligne Roset (furniture design company); they're photo shoots are amazing. I love so many images, it is really hard to pick one!

I Can Always Watch:

Cinderella! because she is able to talk with animals (my secret wish is to someday be like the dog whisperer). Plus, I have been told I can whistle like the birds… :)

I think Mandy Moore would play me perfectly in a movie about my life. People have said we act alike, especially in the movie, “Because I Said So”.

I own too many:

Books! I love collecting books, old and new - I am just a book dork, seriously! I want to have a library full of anything I have read! I really wished the books that open up in the beginning of the old Disney movies were real.

My Guilty Pleasures:

I love baking and I am always coming up with something new to create in the kitchen. My last experiment was wedding cakes! I loved baking and decorating them! But the only problem is that I tend to eat a ton of cake batter in the process - yummy!!

P.S. I Made This!!

If I wasn't a designer, I'd:

be a Graphic Designer (I must admit - I would be designing). I think it would be a blast to design invitations!

OR I'd be the Dog Whisperer - I would love to train dogs - police dogs! (that’s why I own German Shepherds)

These are all my family dogs - I told you, The Dog Whisperer!

My Perfect Day!

Going on a walk with Kyle and the dogs through a really pretty neighborhood, eating brunch somewhere like Backstreet, complete with mimosas, hanging out by the pool and finishing the day off by going to dinner. Then out for dessert and cappuccino at another restaurant like Tony’s. (Hhhmmm… souffle is my favorite!!!)

Over the past few months, the design team at Laura U has grown by leaps and bounds. Because we have such a great design team with different design styles, and from such different backgrounds, it would be unfair not to have them involved in giving you a glimpse into our design world. Today, we start a new series: Profiles in Design: The Laura U Design Team. The first profile to be unveiled is our Senior Designer, Kristina!

Profiles in Design: Meet Kristina......!

Who are you and where are you from?:
I am the Senior Interior Designer at Laura U. I've been working in this industry since 2002, working in the Memphis area and in Chicago, prior to settling down in Houston.

Who shares your address (pets, child(ren), significant others)?:
I live with my amazing common-law husband slash fiance, Brad (aka B-Rad, or SugarBear). We are the proud parents of Ginger and Steve, both Chihuahua mixes, and three extremely overweight cats: Judy, Ramona and Annika. We had some hermit crabs for awhile, but our cats thought they were delicious.

Favorite restaurant:
We have so many fabulous restaurants in Houston, so it's tough to pick a favorite. Plus, the hubs is a major foodie (whatever that means), so we spend a lot of time eating out. We have sushi at Soma on Washington at least once a week. Tony Mandola's is a great spot for seafood and local celeb-spotting. I also love Mockingbird Bistro and Mark's for special occasions.

Outside the office, you can find me:
At a Flea Market. Going to concerts. Reading US Weekly. In my Arts-n-Crafts room, making pillows and jewelry.

Designer I'd like to meet:
Barbara Barry. What a classy lady. Actually, I have been a Babs Barry fan for a really long time. For starters, she really knows what she's doing RE: Interiors. Two, she was one of the first designers to branch out and start designing a line of EVERYTHING: including furniture, rugs, fabrics, lighting, tile, linens, dinnerware, etc., So, I have always looked up to her as a homegoods visionary. Plus, she always looks impeccable!!

Wish I had designed:
Coralie Bickford-Smith's line of hardback classics for Penguin Books, aka the Clothbound Series 1 & 2.

I can always watch:
Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It NEVER gets old or not funny. Spoiler alert, though: it is not for kids.

In the movie about my life, _______________ would play me because:
Chloe Sevigny, because she looks enough like me to be believable, plus she's a fabulous actress. I like her wack-a-doo style, which is comprised of mainly vintage clothing, and she's got that perfect mix of super-awkward, yet confident. Also, she tends to blurt out whatever comes to mind, appropriate or not, so we have that in common.

I own too many:
Cats.....does anyone want a cat?

Guilty pleasures:
I've started to let our housekeeper do the laundry. Although I feel like the laziest woman alive, you simply cannot beat coming home to a freshly folded stack of underpants.

If I wasn't a designer, I'd:
Spend a whole lot more time in my Craft room, and I'd probably start an animal rescue non-profit. I really, really love dogs.

My perfect day:
Late scrambled-egg breakfast with B-Rad before heading over to Fiori Spa for several hours poolside and mineral baths with my girlfriends. I come home later to watch Love, Actually and open up a giant box containing one of everything from the JCrew catalog.

Reflecting on a Ricoh...

At Laura U, we have a high energy group constantly running around fussing over a fabric here, designing a furniture piece there, loving this or that light fixture for a client’s home. Because we are fast paced, and have a growing team of design devotees, we found ourselves in need of that ubiquitous piece of office equipment, a rite of passage for any growing business: the copy machine.

With said copy machine comes great responsibility. Oh Ricoh, the impact you have had on our lives!

I did not realize how much “thinking” our interior design studio does on paper until I found that our lovely, “productivity enhancing” buddy cranked out endless pages... most of which ended up in trash bins after a brief moment in the sun (aka a client’s inspiration board).

Cue Recycling Initiative at Laura U!

We get excited about innovative design, and purposful design (as opposed to purely aesthetic design) is that much better! These smart little bags (thanks Kristina!) have had great impact in our office. They are simple in construction, charming in color, and get the job done. And they have a permanent home next to our favorite new friend, Ricoh the copier!

From Design Within Reach (and ON SALE right now!). Made of industrial-strength tarpaulin – a heavy double-warp fabric that is plastic-coated – the bags are waterproof and can be quickly washed out in the sink or outside with a garden hose.

Aside from our fabulous "tarpaulin" recycling bags, here are some other accessories that we love. And, being the responsible citizen of Earth that you are, I am sure you have some you would love to share with us! Please send us your faves!

Each of these darling pillows is made from an old suit jacket. "Some will have buttons, some will have a pocket, all retro awesome tweeds, herringbones and checks," says Hilary Cosgrove of Kingston, Ontario. She sells the pillows for $65 each.

These bottles were rescued from NYC restaurants and kept out of landfills by transforming them into these one of a kind glasses. From the Green Glass Company.

Your Bachelor Pad!

So, you have finally decided to invest in your very own __________(fill in apartment, condo, home, loft, airstream, etc…). Congratulations! Now, how do you create a fabulous and functional interior for you, the single guy. How do you transform your drab space which is ubiquitously, if not regrettably, referred to as “The Bachelor Pad?” Here are three “to-dos”, three “do-not-dos”, and three “you-get-a-gold-star” tips!

To-Do!

· Invest in a large leather sofa in a dark, warm brown, possibly slightly distressed, with a track arm. *Do not, I repeat, do not buy a sofa with integral recliner or with cushiony arm pad cover things. Those are forbidden. Your sofa should be very comfortable for you, your buddies and the occasional “lady friend” to enjoy. Make sure your leather is stain-resistant. Edelman leather has a product that you can get anything out of (except sharpie marker… keep those out of the house)!

· Select artwork that compliments your style and space. This should be something you actually like as it will inevitably be a great conversation piece. They can range from an abstract painting you found in Italy to a photograph you took yourself. Please, have them tastefully framed in an understated way and arrange them neatly on the wall. Do not stagger your images as this can look confusing and amateur. If you have a set of three, line them up neatly and use a level.

· And, of course, you must have a flat panel TV across from your large leather sofa for gaming and watching sports. Make sure that the console you put below it is larger than the screen. You do not want this wall to feel top heavy. And just tell your “lady friend” you wouldn’t have a television at all but you just can’t miss all of your TiVO’d romantic comedies (P.S. You missed these while you were out volunteering/grocery shopping for your grandmother/cat sitting for your sister etc…). Call TJ at Audio Video Designs and he will fix you up!

Do-Not-Do! (*note - no images of these mishaps are provided because we have never done any of this and do not condone the veiwing of these items mentioned below.)

· Have too many colors and styles. Keep it intentional, simple and uncluttered. If you need help, please do not be afraid to ask. That’s what we’re here for!

· Grunge is no longer an accepted style – trust us, even though Eddie Vedder is still rockin’, the look went out in the 90s. Please keep your space clean for all to enjoy (or have a housekeeper keep you in check).

· Have action figures, cartoons or provocative mags lying around (you know the ones we mean). This is your chic retreat and you should begin to acquire nice cocktail table books and hard-bound literature, even if you don’t read it this week. Leather and rich-mahogany smell optional (but, just so you know, there is a candle for that!).

You-Get-A-Gold-Star!

· Lighting is important in any room. Install dimmers on some of your light fixtures to set the mood (and save money on the electrical bill)!

· Live plants guys! A real live plant allows others to see that you are responsible, nurturing and have the ability to take care of other living things. Choose hearty varieties like English ivy or even the lowly ficus (in a fabulous planter of course) that have amazing survival skills and can live through nearly anything.

· Splurge on tactile items like your sheets, pillows and blankets or anything your body will touch. Put a comfy throw blanket on your sofa. Yes, it seems frilly, and, yes, you will use it!

Our Winter Must Haves!

Now that we are enjoying a lovely mid-February chill, it is abundantly clear that the 2009/2010 Winter furniture and accessories markets have come and gone. From Dallas to NYC to Paris, design houses from around the world have introduced their newest gems! We have gauged the temperature of interior design and it seems that vintage looks and natural materials are what's hot!

Vintage:
We absolutely love the soft, warm glow of a filament bulb on a cold winter's night! These bulbs are made using the same technique and materials used in early Edison bulbs, giving them an authentic, vintage look.

Natural:
Cotton laminated bags are perfect for your upcoming spring shopping! You can feel good about using these tough bags that are manufactured from recylcled materials. Laminated cloth used in India to package bulk fabric is repurposed, becoming your favorite functional tote.

Vintage:
Brighten your cold winter table with these eclectic "Soiree" glasses from Roost. These start as clear glassware that are then dipped in fabulous translucent colors. I love the vintage feel of these glasses: dots, arcs and stripes are etched into the color layer.

Laura U's favorite shopping in Paris, Milan, Florence, & Rome!

After feverishly shopping for my clients and the boutique this winter, I thought I might take a step back and reflect. Touring Paris, Milan, Florence and Rome this past December was inspiring and we were introduced to tons of fantastic product lines! After shopping all day, every day, for ten days straight, we were exhausted but refreshed. Below are just a few of our favorites!

Les Puces (“the Fleas”) in Paris has tons of interesting vendors. At the flea market at St. Oeun we discoverd a truly unique designer on Rue de Rosiers. Ghislain Antiques creates the coolest “French industrial” furnishings.

The Cyrus Company showroom in Milan.

Versace Home in Milan.

The owner of Pandora in Florence (near Santa Maria Novella and not far from the Duomo) is not a product designer but a curator of sorts. Her collection of 1920s through 1970s French and Italian antique and vintage furnishings is enviable. This was, by far, my favorite find on the entire shopping trip.

In Rome, I loved the Devon and Devon showroom. Near the Spanish Steps and just a couple of streets from Via Condotti (where you can find ALL of the major couture showrooms), it is a gorgeous showcase of elegant bathroom fixutures.

Define your Distinct Design Style II

After perusing the four styles discussed last week (Traditional, Transitional, Contemporary and Eclectic), you may have noticed that your Distinct Design style was not included. Don’t despair! Our breakdown of design styles continues! Below are three additional design styles and one may be yours… and if not, check back next week for more interior design looks.

Art Deco

Your style is grounded in geometry (ex. Fan motif), your color palette is based on black and metallics but is highlighted with rich hues like red. This is a theatrical style, which is why the look is right at home in today’s media and theatre rooms. This glam style is always fun and makes your home a favorite for entertaining! Hollywood Regency

The theme is luxury and your over-the-top style just oozes glamour! Designers pioneered this glitzy style in 1930s Hollywood but it has grown in popularity over the past couple of years. It's a new year and the design industry is buzzing about what home owners and buyers desire in 2009. According to a panelist of designers at a session on “Design Trends Marketplace” at the International Builder Show, home owners are looking for more contemporary looks. Happily, I have found this trend to be true in our most recent projects and I think we will continue to see a move to less cluttered and intentionally spare spaces.

"Today’s minimalist design may mix straighter furniture elements, two different colors repeated throughout (e.g. white and green) and a mix of fun, bold accessories (such as a red chair) or a traditional element (such as an antique mirror).

Indeed, contemporary architecture is even spreading to suburbia (see examples from Agave’s energy efficient contemporary homes in Austin, Texas).

Here are some of the common design trends growing in demand.

1. Lighting options used as pieces of art in funky shapes. A variety of lighting options can be used that are decorative yet functional.

2. Outdoor living that serves as an extension of the inside of the home with outdoors that boast comfortable seating, audio, TVs, a fireplace, and artwork to punch up the space.

3. Design accessories reflecting nature speak to buyers who are more aware of preserving the environment. For example, tree designs are popular, such as via an art sculpture, painting, or even reflected in a table.

4. Green design elements, such as water-efficient appliances and LED lighting under the kitchen cabinets, continue to gain traction and offer cost savings.

5. His and her amenities are increasing, such as even separate garages and vanities with his countertop higher than her’s for a more custom look.

6. Car lifts offer compact storage of vehicles and are expected to grow in popularity as lot sizes grow smaller. A basement built under a garage can allow for the car to descend into the basement until you need it. Or a garage with a higher ceiling can stow the car above.

7. Windows can serve as focal points of a room as well as boost energy efficiency. Floor-to-ceiling windows can add drama to a room.

8. Wood in dark or light stains and in various materials are being used throughout homes. For example, wood details on the ceiling can enhance the architecture and Palmwood, which comes from coconut palms, can be used to add a featured wall in the room.

9. Mirrors add glamour to a room and help buyers see themselves in the space–literally. Mirrors add a focal point, enlarge rooms, and can be an important detail to include in homes.

10. More electronics are being sprinkled everywhere, such as iPod docking stations throughout the home and TVs in practically every room (e.g. kitchen, study, and bathrooms)."

Once again the holidays have flown by and we find ourselves solidly in the middle of January. How this happens year after year I just don't know. But, we at Laura U have so many exciting things in the works for the New Year ... and they just keep coming!

I swept through the Dallas Market this week, shopping for clients and the Collection. Don't tell us we are in a recession because the Market was packed and all shoppers are excited for what 2009 promises.

I found some fantastic new pieces from the designer lines we currently offer and two new lines that I am counting the days to receive! Check out TRINA TURK for a peek at some of the fab pillows we are expecting. I also snapped up the cutest aprons you have ever seen from Peking Handicraft. These can't get here soon enough!

Another thing I absolutely adore about hanging out at Laura U everyday is that I get to spend tons of time with the best local art work in Houston. Allison Hunter's beautiful images are currently on display (you may have seen her work on the cover of 002 Mag last month). But they are not up for much longer! I am sad to see them go but we are sending them off in style with a Champagne Toast on January 22nd (6pm-8pm). Please plan to join us!

Concept: To create a fashion forward corporate office with an art deco edge and a strongly defined color pallet. We establish the style and color concept in the reception lounge: charcoal, blonde, black, chrome and a hint of red (photo frames).
The conference room is a simplified, statement space. The color concept is reinforced here excepting red for a more serious effect.
All spaces attach to the common area which is open, uncluttered with dramatic art lighting.
The CEO’s office is divided based on function: storage/display, work, and lounge. Some existing elements were retained, infusing the space with a found and collected feel. The custom storage holds files and his collections and original art.
The office of the marketing director became the “jewel box” of the project. Custom cabinetry makes this space functional. The occupant is young and stylish so we incorporated a soft pink, otherwise the color concept is reflected.

Where can you get the most impact from your design dollars?

I have had this conversation quite a bit lately with local builders and homeowners. Should you spend your cash on your plumbing or should you devote your hard earned dollars to your tile? or is sprinkling a little bit of green on everything the best way to go?

I have found that putting your money into several high impact areas has the max effect. Here are the house parts that I like to focus on:

Fun with your foyer. This is the first contact everyone will have with your home. Invest in your front door and door hardware as this sets the tone for the rest of your interior. Fabulous lighting on your porch is a must.

Make your Master bathroom shine. I like to add special lighitng in this room. Interesting sconces or a sparkling chandelier are often unexpected and fun. Please use a gorgeous framed mirror instead of the wall-to-wall plate mirrors!

Kitchen is still king. A beautiful natural stone countertop is worth it. And a hood above your range can act as the centerpiece for your kitchen. Go to http://www.ventahood.com/ for ideas.

In general you can expect to lay out the most dollars on your tile and lighting for the maximum benefit. Plumbing fixtures are so much fun and can get easily out of hand. Allow plenty for your kitchen and master bath and save on your secondary bathrooms. Go for broke in your powder - this is such a special space as you can create a "jewel" in your home for a small amount.

Perhaps tomorrow will be dedicated to the art of the powder room...

Different Strokes

I have often been asked how to apply bold, rich color successfully. This is easily achieved by following these three rules:

combine colors that are in the same tonal range
use colors that compliment each other
save your bold colors for accent walls or interesting furniture pieces.

When selecting colors for your home, you should first evaluate your look. Do you tend to warm or cool tones. Are your colors more yellow and red or more blue and gray. It is best to keep warm and cool tones separate, although a burgundy wall can be amazing when trimmed in a very light gray (aren't there always exceptions!).

Two or three different colors combined in the same room result in a fab space. Start by identifying your “Accent” wall. This is usually the wall that your bed rests against or just an art niche in your dining room. The “Accent” will receive your boldest color and the rest of the room falls away in sedate “Field” color. Mix in a fun furniture piece in a punchy color and voila!

By painting a single wall in your "Accent" you are signaling that something special happens in that space. Place your favorite piece of art or a family portrait on this wall. Your "Accent" may also call out the entry to a special room in your home.

A natural follow up to the 2008 Color ‘Cast is a full week dedicated to the how’s of PAINT.

It’s been said once or twice that the absolute quickest way to dramatically change the mood of a room is PAINT. A beige room is reinvented with stormy blue walls creating a calming atmosphere. This deep, dusky hue will enhance your artwork and your black and white photos will be even more dramatic. A youthful yellow or invigorating red will fill your kitchen with energy. Pop these colors with a crisp, white trim. Any room in your home can be reborn in a dark plum: living rooms become cozier, bedrooms are more intimate and dining rooms are instantly elegant.

I recommend the following colors for your home in 2008. You will love them for the year and they may even become your trademark color!

Deep Hues:

A gorgeous blue that leans to the gray side is Granite Peak from Sherwin Williams. Try trimming this room in Evening Shadow instead of the traditional white. I also love the color Black Pepper from Kravet for Benjamin Moore.
Blackberry and Plum Brown are amazing shades that are new to Sherwin Williams in ’08.

Soft Tones:

Pale Blue can help create an informal setting and works well with natural wood tones and Carrara marble. Use Shore from Restoration Hardware

Try Pink Shadow in your master bedroom for a feminine touch.

Welcome to the maiden posting of the Laura U Blog! My mission is to create a space for inspiring design discussion and ideas that are a natural extension of the Laura U Collection. The Collection focuses on one-of-a-kind finds for your home, local flavors in art and singular artisinal furnishings.

As 2007 draws to a close designers of both interiors and fashion look to the color forecast for 2008. What better way to ring in the new blog, and the new year, than with a new color 'cast? One of the key components in design is COLOR and here I will focus on the hippest of the current color combos.

Taking cues from both Pantone View Color Planner and Sherwin Williams Color Forecast, I have pulled together three palates that will transition us stylishly into 2008!

Color Story 1: the Sophisticate

Peach, Black, Gold.

This dewy look is absolutley timeless.

To acheive the poised nature of this scene, use a fleshy peach on your walls and accent with a crisp white trim. I often use black on base and crown mouldings, but only when a bold statement is in order. The designer of this space keeps the backdrop consistent by continuing the same color on the walls and window coverings. Then he pops the look with a wide drapery flange in black. Hardware, mirrors and furnishings in gold are classically current.

C1: Peach - "Fragile Beauty" from Sherwin Williams is a fresh tone from their 2008 Concepts in Color collection.

C2: Black - When I use black paint I use Sherwin Williams "Tricorn Black."

C3: Gold - The Triton shell from Bungalow 5 design group makes an assertive statement.

Color Story 2: the Romantic

rosy brown, purple, pewter & gold.

This combination is very boudoir. I love the glam feel of the deep purple with mirror and metallics. Try a mix of mink, bold purple and a pinch of burgundy for good measure.

In this scene the mirrored chest from Century Furniture grounds the room with a beautifully crafted metal base in a pewter finish.

Gold is very now and works perfectly when paired with pewter tones.

C1: Rosy brown - try this subdued shade from Sherwin Williams: "Dutch Cocao."

C2: Pewter wallcovering (like Gracie "Pewter Leaf" available to-the-trade) is gorgeous when installed in a barrel vault ceiling and uplit.

C3(s): Deep purple and burgundy - Stop by Laura U Collection to see the newest pillow collection from Ankasa. The Arabian Nights pillows mingle purple, burgundy, pewter and gold.

Color Story 3: the Dramatist

green, cream, gold (yet again)

How fabulous is this decaying and startling green? I am in love with the idea of painting a wall and it's baroque mouldings a fantastically flat green. I am not sure this will work for everyone; in fact, I am sure it will not work for many. Maybe we can all begin with a small, verdant accessory!

Down the rabbit hole anyone?

C1: The Spring-leaf green walls and mouldings will be the only sound you need in this room.

C2: A lovely, cream, tone-on-tone carpet will quiet the noise and compliment your look.
